“I used to be about 100lbs overweight, unmotivated, embarrassed to go to the gym, low energy, basically all the things associated with weight gain, I was experiencing it.”
When I decided to get serious about getting in shape, I had to assess my priorities. At the time, working out was taking last place to other things in my life. I was also afraid, embarrassed, and felt shame.
Being real with my INSECURITIES
This was one of the hardest things………
I found myself feeling embarrassed about how I used to look. This didn’t start happening until I lost weight. The body dysmorphia, the insecurities, the desire to work harder so I “look a certain way”, has crept back in.
When I was my heaviest, I was my happiest mentally. It’s like the pressure was off for me to care so much about my physical appearance and so I focused on my confidence and mental health.
As I have started getting back in to better physical shape I am learning how to navigate the mental side. I love taking pride in my appearance and looking my best but that doesn’t mean I need to obsess over it. It means I need to keep the same mindset of self love, confidence and mental health OVER my desire to look my best physically.
one of the major fears that I have noticed is my fear of people seeing how I “used to look” when I was bigger and judging me for being “fat”…
But you know what…….
F*** THAT!
MEET EVAN
This is the story of a man with many talents, Evan Slaughter aka Fit2Serve.
Check out how I lost weight
I knew I had to take one step at a time and be sure to make it fun.
Pickleball was one of the best things that came into my life. It was my therapy and a way to take my first steps toward a healthier life.
One of the first types of exercise that I did before going to the gym was jumping rope.
I was afraid to go to the gym. I know a lot of you can relate to this. Afraid of messing up in front of people, not feeling fit enough. You are not alone. Check out how the jump rope has been my BFF with my weightloss journey below.

Just Start Jumping!
When it came time for me to get serious about making some much needed changes, it was around the same time I discovered the power of a simple piece of exercise equipment.. the jump rope.
Before I was comfortable going back to the gym, I decided to just jump. I would take my jump rope out and jump at a park near my house where I was alone and comfortable exercising. That led to more and more excitement and eventually led to my love for CrossFit and the gym community.
When I reflect on this journey and how it kind of started with a jump rope it is nuts to me.
Picking up a jump rope changed my life in ways I never expected. It wasn’t just about getting fit—it opened the door to new friends, the CrossFit community, and a love for staying active.
Community is a huge part
of why I am continuing to have success with my overall health improvements both physically and mentally. Who I choose to surround myself is key to success.
When I was struggling with drug addiction, I was hanging around other drug addicts. When I went to rehab and got off opiates, I hung around people that were also sober from opiates.
But when I started losing weight, everything changed.
As I worked on my physical health, I slowly began to surround myself with people who were physically fit. It wasn't just about being around people who looked a certain way—it was about immersing myself in a mindset of growth and positivity. These people were driven, supportive, and cared about improving themselves in every way. That energy rubbed off on me, and I realized that having the right people around you makes a world of difference.
One important lesson I’ve learned
is that if the people in your life didn’t love or support you when you were at your worst, whether physically or mentally, they never truly loved you. Real love means sticking around through the highs and the lows, supporting each other no matter what stage you’re in. This is a reminder to love yourself fully and strive to be the best version of yourself, whatever that looks like.
What started as a simple, fun way to exercise with a jump rope turned into a deep passion for fitness and enjoying life.
It showed me that being healthy is about so much more than just working out. It’s about having fun, feeling good in your own skin, and building connections with others who lift you up. Ultimately, fitness became a vehicle for joy, self-love, and community, and that’s something I never expected.
If you’re feeling stuck or unsure of where to begin on your fitness journey,
know that you’re not alone. I’ve been there. It doesn’t take a gym membership or hours of training to get started—it can be as simple as picking up a jump rope and moving your body. That’s how my journey began, and it completely transformed my life.
I recommend starting with something like the Rapid Fit, an adjustable jump rope that’s perfect for beginners and pros alike. It’s affordable, easy to use, and can be done anywhere. Don’t overthink it—just start.
Every jump, every step, brings you closer to the best version of yourself. And remember, this isn’t just about losing weight or getting fit; it’s about discovering the journey, connecting with others, and realizing you are capable of so much more than you ever thought.
You’ve got this—grab a jump rope and take that first step. You’ll be amazed at what happens when you start moving. Let’s do this together!
