FAQ
Jump Ropes
How do I size my jump rope?
It’s easy to find your jump rope size. Beginners, take your height (say, 5’9”) and add three feet (8’9”). As a quick spot check, you can fold the rope in two and put it under one foot. The cable (excluding the handles) should touch your sternum.
However, the height + 3 feet rule is meant to be a starting point. As your technique improves, and you begin to pull your elbows back and place your hands closer to your hips, you’ll be able to use a shorter rope.
Is there a difference between a speed rope and jump rope?
A speed rope is a more advanced version of a jump rope. Typically made out of lighter-weight materials, and built with more sophisticated handles that spin faster, speed ropes require more familiarity and skill than jump ropes. That’s especially true because the speed rope’s lack of resistance makes it difficult to track the wire moving around your body. Somewhat counter-intuitively, because speed ropes spin faster, they produce less intensity. If intensity is what you’re after, consider a jump rope, or better yet, a Drag Rope.

Get Started Jumping
What's the best jump rope for beginners?
Here are the questions that we want you to ask yourself when determining which jump rope you should get started with:
- What workouts are you doing?
- Do you have a current rope or use one at their gym?
- Can you do double unders?
- Is that something you are interested in mastering?
- How tall are you?
- Are you looking for heavy weight ropes or thin ones for speed?
Any beginner recommendation: We always recommend our RapidFit jump rope with the Buff 3.4 cable weight. The specific reason is because the weight of the Buff 3.4 is not too heavy, and will allow the user to feel where the cable is while swinging it. It’s much easier to start with a cable that has weight on it so you can understand the rhythm and feel the timing of the rope. A super light cable can get lost around your body while swinging, and the Buff provides feedback so that doesn’t happen.

Jumping roping improves cardio respiratory system, strengthens the heart, improves bone density, tone muscles, burn calories and fat and improves agility and coordination.
What are the benefits of a weighted jump rope?
The beauty of a weighted jump rope is that it offers more feedback to the user. A weighted cable forces you to slow down and understand the movement, whether you are practicing single unders, side swings, double unders, or any other trick. We here at Rx Smart Gear, are advocates for people training heavy and competing light, and are big proponents of people training with our “buff” cable which weighs in at 3.4oz. We find that our buff cable offers enough feedback to dial in form, while not too much that it taxes out your shoulders and core.
Everything you know and love about jump rope, from testing your agility, coordination to burning extra calories will be taken to the next level with a weighted jump rope.Speed Rope vs Weighted Rope

It depends. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that people in uncomplicated pregnancies start and remain active before, during, and after pregnancy, but it’s best to talk to your healthcare provider first. If you’re cleared to jump, here are a few tips:
- Keep your head in a neutral position
- Stack your ribcage over your pelvis
- Engage your core muscles
- Jump only high enough to clear the rope

Boxers jump rope for a number of reasons, including practicing timing, building foot strength, improving cardio endurance, and increasing their quickness and explosiveness. We should also mention that we’re the official jump rope partner of USA Boxing.
What’s the best jump rope for CrossFit?

For beginners, that means a heavier rope that you can feel as it moves around your body, and ideally one that’s also adjustable. That way, you can shorten the cable as your technique improves. If you’re already comfortable with a rope, and can easily string together single- and double-unders, you may want a lighter cable and more sophisticated handles, which will spin the rope faster, allowing you to do more work in less time.

You can jump rope with flat feet. In fact, it’s a great way to strengthen your collapsed arches, especially the tibialis posterior. Just keep in mind these eight tips:

- Warm up and stretch your calves, ankles, and arches beforehand.
- Start with a manageable pace and duration and gradually increase both as your strength and endurance improve.
- Keep your knees slightly bent, jump only high enough to clear the cable, and land softly on the balls of your feet, not on your heels.
- Consider investing in a custom jump rope that can be tailored to your height and skill level, allowing for a more comfortable and efficient workout.
- Consider jumping on a softer surface, like a mat or carpet, or even the RXSG AIR Jumping Mat.
- Regularly do simple exercises, like towel scrunches, to strengthen the muscles in your feet.
- If you experience persistent pain, stop and rest.
Grips
Recommendations for washing Alec Smith Grips?
You can use a wire brush. Sometimes the chalk and pressure will matte down the hairs and make the palm strap smooth, use a wire brush to de-matte.Do not submerge in water as this will tarnish/weather the leather. We recommend laying out flat in the sun to get rid of smell, or taking a damp cloth and lightly rubbing the palm strap, but there are no set recommendations for washing leather.
Can I exchange my grips?
Yes, if they are in brand new, unused condition. Opening to try on is OK, but, make sure there is no chalk or visible signs of use.
The customer is responsible for paying to mail the items to us, but the exchange and shipping back to you are free.
Please mail the grips to:
Rx Smart Gear
1800 John Towers Ave., Suite B
El Cajon, CA 92020
Inside the package, please include a note with your order number and state that this is an exchange for the new size you would like. Once we receive your package, we will process the exchange. Please let us know if you have any questions.
My grips ripped, can I get a replacement?
2 answers:
1) if its within a few uses from the purchase. Please send us a picture.
2) if it’s been over 3 months, we do not replace. Grips will wear down. Chalk and storage with moisture can soften leather and cause them to rip.
Do you have any more Alec Smith 1.0 left?
We have moved to the 2.0 version only and the 1.0 will not be coming back to stock. We have added a few minor adjustments to the 2.0. We have added a half and inch longer and quarter of an inch wider to each palm strap.
